North High Held Together With…Bandaids?

Toteonia Roberts, Journalism I

You don’t notice them until you need them. Who are they? Nurses. Nurse Blood and Nurse Givot are the people holding North High School together, one ice pack at a time.

Nurse Blood has been at North for two years. Her original plan wasn’t to be a high school nurse but to be an elderly care nurse. Even though her plan didn’t go as planned, she is far from disappointed. “I love it here. there’s great energy with the kids.” She describes North High as her best experiences in nursing. Her worst? Saying goodbye to group homes after finishing clinicals.

She worked in hospitals, clinics, and even now works in a children’s hospitals on weekends. Who is she? Nurse Givot. She’s been in the district for nine years, two here at North. She decided to be a nurse after caring for her paralyzed brother. “I saw nurses care for my brother and I thought ‘I can do better than that.'” She mad dear friends in nursing school but describes her worst experiences as those when she has multiple emergencies happening at once and has to decide which ones need to be taken care of first. “I think some of the kids here don’t realize how serious some of the things we take of are.”

When a student walks into the Health office, there are some things they like to see, two of which are passes and kids who aren’t texting. They also have some other expectations, such as going to the nurse before calling home, letting them know when you leave, and in general being respectful and keeping other people’s health problems private. “What happens in the Health Office stays in the Health Office.”

They also want to note that if you’re having an emergency they will accept you even if you don’t have a pass. If you aren’t having an emergency, please be considerate and observant as you enter the office. One last thing…if you’re having an emergency, speak up. Not being able to breathe is a lot more important thanĀ someone else’s already fading bruise.

No matter what happens, always remember that Nurse Blood and Nurse Givot always have your back and a lifetime’s supply of Band-aids.
