The coffee puzzle

Everyone loves a good riddle or picture puzzle that they can wrap their minds around, and try to solve. Recently a Picture puzzle has been tossed around the internet that consist of coffee being poured into different tubes. The question was “Which coffee cup will be full first?”. I decided to take this picture puzzle around north high and ask students which coffee cup they thought would become full first. Most of the kids and teacher I asked said that cup number 9 would be filled first, because the tube was the closes to the bottom of the tube maze, but if you look closely you will noticed that the bottom of the tube that leads to cup 9 is blocked off, no coffee will be able to get into the cup at all, therefore disqualifying it form the race. The second majority vote was cup number 4, the explanation was because the tube was lower and the coffee can flow directly into the cup, but if you look closely you would notice that the opening of the tube that leads to cup 4 is also blocked off, which will not allow any coffee to flow into cup 4, and disqualifying it from the race too. This leads you to the last two cups, 5 and 7. Between those two which do you think would become full first? If you picked number 5 you are correct. The tubes leading to cup 7 are blocked off from the entrance. As you may or may not have notice the tube leading to cup 5 is the only tube that doesn’t block coffee from entering the cup. Therefore it is the only cup that would become full, not just the first. Number 5 was the second least picked in this picture riddle. Why? Well One thing I noticed was that most of the students were looking at the placement of the tubes rather than the tubes its self.
