North High Starts off Spring with Sadie Hawkins Dance
April 24, 2018
On March 16, the North High School student body flocked to the gym after school for the annual Sadie Hawkins school dance. Sadie Hawkins is a school dance where a girl asks her date in place of the traditional ‘date asks girl’ manner. This dance, as almost all other dances are, was planned and coordinated by North High Student Council, but this year there was a different spin on it; the dance took place in the spring-time instead of the traditional fall-time, and there was a sundress theme in place of the long-established ‘matching t-shirts with date’ style.
After Sno-Daze, Sadies is one of the most popular student council run dances at North, and many people enjoy coming to school to participate and have fun with friends.

Sophomore Olivia Rolland says, “I really enjoyed it! [Sadies] Even though this dance is not one of the most popular school dances I still had a lot of fun attending and participating in planning it– and I had an excuse to leave the house.” Junior Morris McCollum agrees, “Personally, I thought Sadies was really fun and being able to plan it. Seeing it from a standpoint of someone on student council, there were many places for improval but all in all, I think a lot of people had a good time.”
School dances are as old as school itself, it is a good way for the student body to feel connected, and to enjoy themselves in a safe environment, without having to make elaborate plans. Even though dances are as customary as orientation, many of the students at North have nev

er attended a school dance. Juniors Anson Waturuocha and Brook Kassa have never been to any of the school dances before this past Sadies. Anson says “I decided to go to this dance because I was asked. I don’t exactly know why I’ve never gone to a school dance before, maybe it’s because I thought they were all boring despite what my friends told me.” Brook Kassa agrees as well “I don’t know why I’ve never attended a school dance in the past, but I felt like my high school career was coming to an end and I felt that I had to participate in at least a dance or social event through the school.” They both say they had a wonderful time at Sadies and both feel they were in a positive environment, surrounded by people who were having a blast as well, and they see themselves attending other school dances in the future, possibly being more involved in planning them as well.
Even though dances may not be someone’s specific way of enjoying themselves, it’s still a good way to create a sense of community throughout the school, and it’s also a way to step out of your comfort zone and have fun– while still staying in a place where you feel safe.
