St. Paul, Minnesota – In an exciting development, Minnesotan commission members create a new flag that aims to embody and captivate the essence of the state, and its communities.
On December 15th, 2023 the State Emblems Commission narrowed down the flag contest down to three finalists whose designs featured bright and vibrant colors, Minnesota’s landscape, and also included the iconic ‘North Star’.
The new flag design, which was a collaboration with designers, artists and the public, is seeking to represent the unique identity and values of Minnesota.
The previous Minnesota flag was seen as very offensive for its outdated depiction of a Native American riding away on horseback, while a white farmer plowed pushed a plow in the foreground, implying that the farmer had taken the land.
As the flag undergoes its final stages, the unveiling has sparked a sense of pride and excitement in Minnesotan. Many Minnesotans think that having a new flag will bring about a fresh start, and build more of a connection with other communities.
The North American Vexillology association had also helped with the designs, by eliminating blue and green stripes, and changing it for a more solid line of blue and green which make the designs simpler.
Some of the symbols you might see on the flag are the eight point star that is similar to the star on the floor in the capital, and the colors blue, green and white that symbolize Minnesota’s vast lakes, forests, and skies.
