Hey Polars! Our school’s Black Student Union has hosted an extraordinary Black History Month event on February 15th, and featured several amazing performances and guest speakers by people from the North community and beyond.
As the third annual Showcase of Black Excellence, the event was the place to be. First in the evening was the fashion show. The students involved in the show provided the audience with all types of looks from cultural garments to street wear. The audience was full of energy and the students provided an amazing show.
Along with the fashion show, a few other acts of talent were shown that night. Two current students and one North alumni showed off their singing abilities. Two student-led dancing groups each performed several dances, the girls each spent time and effort putting together their dances for the night and took the stage with a great amount of energy. An outside guest also performed a song that was to inspire people to think about their future selves.
Besides the performances, the BSU was able to have around six alumni representing several HBCU fraternities and sororities speak about their organizations. The members discussed how they impact their communities and opened up their eyes to kids here in Minnesota that they could be a part of one of these sororities or fraternities without having to leave the state.
Several members of BSU are graduating this year and they took the stage to give advice to the younger students on how to navigate high school with a more positive attitude towards things. They also gave a heartfelt thanks to co-advisors Deron Drummond and Walt Whittaker, who put their time and effort into making sure that the students of BSU have a space for themselves.
After the festivities that took place in the auditorium, there was food provided in the cafeteria where families and friends gathered and ate together.
BSU is always welcome to new members and people are encouraged to join. If you have any questions you can go to Drummond, Whittaker, or President Mistura Tiamiyu.
