Pharell Williams, the thirteen-time Grammy winner, and director Morgan Nerville come together with Lego in this creative biopic detailing Pharell’s life story and rise to fame
Released on October 11th, now showing at the Marcus Theater,this movie explores the life and career of the singer through musical numbers with dreamy visuals, using songs that feature Gwen Stafani, distant cousin Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar.
Pharell describes his childhood, explaining how music was a constant factor in his everyday day life. He says he would see colors coming out of the boombox speakers when listening to Stevie Wonder, which he found later in life to be symptoms of synesthesia. In 2013, Pharell spoke to NPR about this: “All your sense nerve endings are kind of connected- sometimes some of them stay stuck together and for visual and auditorial — it just means that the visual nerve ending and the auditorial nerve ending are still connected. So they send ghost images to each other.”
Chad Hugo’s short lines in the biopic may not seem as important to those who don’t keep up with pop music, but fans all over the internet were surprised to see him even mentioned. In April of this year, it came out that Chad Hugo and Pharell Williams were in a legal dispute over the copyright of “Neptunes” the name of their production duo. Hugo claimed that Williams of “fraudulently” trying to monopolize the trademark. Tabloids say the two aren’t on speaking terms, though Hugo does have a few lines within the movie, and they are most likely from year
5 years in the making, this movie has been anticipated by fans since June of this year. From the week of October 11th- 17th, it has only made 5.5 million USD at the box office, which is considered low compared to the budget of 16 million. Some blame it on marketing, others say it’s because the movie is bad. But I implore you to find out for yourself.
