When is Hispanic Heritage Month?
National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th and ends on October 15th. This cross-month celebration covers the anniversaries of several important events.
The history of Hispanic Heritage month goes back to 1968 when President Lyndon Johnson officially recognized the time as “Hispanic Heritage Week.” Then, in 1988, President Ronald Reagan enacted a law extending the celebration to a 30-day period.
September 15th to October 15th was chosen for several reasons. Countries in Latin America such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all celebrate the anniversary of their independence on September 15th. Mexico and Chile then celebrate their independence on September 16th and September 18th, respectively.
Additionally, Indigenous Peoples Day (previously Columbus Day) falls on October 12th, and holds a special meaning to some Latin American countries where it’s known under a few different names: Día de la Raza, Día de la Hispanidad, and Día de los Pueblos Originarios y el Diálogo Intercultural are all celebrated on October 12th as an alternative to Columbus day to celebrate Hispanic culture.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a special, meaningful time of year to everyone who comes from Hispanic and Latinx roots. It’s an opportunity to shine a light on their unique and beautiful culture that takes part in making the world we live in a diverse web of human connections.
Hispanic Heritage Month at North
To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, North’s Latinx club is going to be holding some special events. For the October 6-9 school week they’re hosting a spirit week for the entire student body to enjoy. Monday’s theme is Fresa vs. Vaquero (preppy vs. country), Tuesday is wear a white lie t-shirt, Wednesday is Heroes (seniors and juniors) vs. Villains (sophomores and freshman), and Thursday wraps up the week with Cultural day.
During spirit week Latinx will also have a picture booth in the cafeteria during lunch where you can take photos. Those who are deemed the best dressed for each of the prompts during the week will receive special prizes, so make sure you dress to impress!
Hispanic Heritage month is all about bringing people together through appreciating both Hispanic and Latinx culture. People – especially in the U.S. – will hear “Hispanic Heritage Month” and think only of Mexican culture, but there’s so much diversity in the Latin American world. If you’re curious and want to learn more about Hispanic and Latinx culture you can catch the Latinx club after school from 3:00-4:00 pm every Wednesday in room 303.
For those here at North, Hispanic Heritage Month is about remembering. Remembering the cultures colonized and nearly erased but fought against those who tried to suppress their identities. Through their dance and art teams and the events they host, Latinx seeks to help their community by building a space open to diversity, expression, and having fun with friends.
