Jana Hedlund, a Special Ed teacher, came up with the idea of a garden by seeing other community schools grow their gardens. Last year, she earned a grant to start a garden with the help from Mr. Nelson. Ms. Hedlund and her class start planting the seeds in the winter and with constant attention from the class during the school year, they are transplanted into the garden in the spring.

The project started in Winter 2017.

Ms. Hedlund funded her garden with the grant from Education Minnesota and the Whole Foods Foundation.

Mr. Nelson was supportive for Ms. Hedlunds garden. Mr. Helwig and Mr. Sloan helped to find a good spot for the garden, so it wasn’t a challenge for Ms. Hedlund.

Ms.sHedlund gets her garden materials and seeds from Menards and Amazon.

Ms. Hedlund was also planning to start a rooftop garden at first. Mr. Nelson thought it would be cool too, but said it be easier to make it on the ground.

This garden project is an educational bonus for the school showing students how to plant vegetables and flowers along with the health gains from the veggies.
