Since around 2022 to the present, more students have transferred into ISD 622 from other districts because of their family issues, wanting a new start, or even just their families moving out further into the suburbs, to a different state.
In 2022, I was a new student to this district myself, so I wanted to know the thoughts, opinions, and experiences of other students who had moved into our district. So, I sat down and interviewed a couple of students about their experiences, and how it positively or negatively impacted their lives.
“North is a lot different compared to Humboldt and I’ve enjoyed it so far,” said Eh Paw, a junior. Humboldt is a school in the SPPS District; she bounced around back and forth with Humboldt because of her family moving around a lot so she never really felt like she had a place there. Her family moving around wasn’t the issue, she struggled with making friends in Humboldt because no one was ever really friendly, or they would just stick to their specific friend groups and refused to include outsiders. In the interview, she mentions that she enjoys it here a lot more because it’s easier for her to make friends and she feels like she actually belongs in this school. “I found myself making a lot more friends in the two years that I’ve been here quicker than the three years I was at Humboldt.”
“It’s hard for me here, I don’t really have any friends, and my best friend goes to a different school so I’m pretty much by myself,” said Eh Soe, a freshmen. sophomore. Soe is Paw’s little brother, although they’re siblings, they had completely different experiences within the two schools that they attended together. It was a lot easier for him to make friends at Humboldt; their experiences were different because when their family was moving around, he was only in elementary school so it didn’t impact him as much as it did for his sister. He only attended two years of Humboldt but during his first year he made friends right off the bat, so you would think it’d be easy for him to make friends at North but it’s been the complete opposite.
It’s difficult to cope with a huge change like transferring to a completely different district, but it changes you for better or for worse. It can both negatively and positively impact who you are around current environments. Sometimes a big change like this can be good for you, and sometimes it’ll make you become more of a introvert, but no matter what or where you come from, every environment should be a safe and welcoming place, it just depends on the person and whether or not they like the new environments that they’re in.
