After tremendous amounts of effort and hard work, North High boys swim and dive team crushes it the 2018 4AA section final meet and steals 3rd place! Divers Tony Mudec, Jake Mudec, and Tyson Sonnek all qualified for state and took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place. Tony Mudec was nominated diver of the meet and broke a school record in the 11-dive! While the divers of the meet showed off their talent, so did the swimmers!

Mitchell Whyte swam in multiple races, including the 200 Medley Relay, the 100 Fly, the 100 Backstroke, and the 400 Freestyle Relay. Whyte qualified for state in all four races, broke two meet records in the 100 Fly and 100 Backstroke, and was nominated as swimmer of the meet! The other swimmers who swam with Whyte in the 200 Medley Relay included Max Parks, Jared Baetzold, and Nathan Huntley, and swimmers who swam with him in 400 Freestyle Relay was Jonathan Peabody, and once again, Jared Baetzold and Nathan Huntley.

But that’s not all! Bartzold and Huntley raced against each other and clashed head-to-head in 100 Freestyle, placing 1st and 2nd place and moved on to state! Other competitive swims that night included Jonathan Peabody, an 8th grader, who placed 7th in the 200 Freestyle and 6th place in the 500 Freestyle! During a second heat of the 200 Medley Relay, Willy Coborn, Adam Thao, Max Parks, and Tony Mudec finished 5th!

It is easy to see just how many successes the team had, but it begs the question: How did the boys manage to pull it off? Tess Behrens, head coach of North High’s swim and dive team, has the answers. “The ability to persevere is important because it helps and an athlete guide themself to their full potential as well as recovering from setbacks.” Behrens also added that attitude plays a critical role. “ The boys’ were able to overcome weaknesses by choosing not to dwell on them. They chose to focus on positive aspects and that allows them to achieve great things.” Behrens mentioned that the team had an addition way of staying strong. “North’s greatest strength is their ability to work collaboratively as a team towards both individual and team goals. They worked together in order to better themselves individually.” Behrens last statement was that every athlete on the team had “determination and resilience to help reach success.” In conclusion, it is safe to say that North Highs boys swim and dive team had a 100% performance, and that it is definitely a season to remember!
